Sandra Bullock & George Clooney in Gravity

I knew there’s something more with Alfonso Cuarón when I watched “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban”. That was his first movie I watched and I could see that it was quite different among the others in that series. It didn’t really entertain the readers as a fan, but it truly entertained movie-goers, whether a fan or not. For me, that is a good thing. I love his work on that Harry Potter movie.

Back to “Gravity”, the story is actually simple but it has a powerful message. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney’s characters, although contradicted each other but leave a strong impression. She was too pessimistic and he was very optimistic. But, he was right, never give up on yourself, life is one hell of a ride.

It was like that one simple message to ‘never give up’ being carried in a grand, extravagant, dangerous yet beautiful way in what we called as life in space. the computer graphic was very smooth, believable, as if we were up there, seeing the rays of sunlight, aurora, sunrise, the cumulus party circulating in one area on the Earth’s atmosphere.

The acting performances from both actors were spectaculars. The sound effect was awesome. The special effects, computer graphics were phenomenal. One thing that I noticed was when the story set up in space, the camera angle mostly took the scenes from above the head of the characters and when Sandra Bullock was finally on Earth, the camera angle mostly from below, the same level with the land. This was as if emphasizing the place setting. If you’re a film or communication student and doing a thesis about semiotics and especially “Gravity” as your object, that particular camera angle could be your material. Read on semiotics theory especially one from Roland Barthes to help you on this one.

Anyway, don’t listen to your friends if they say watching “Gravity” causes vertigo. It’s a great movie that will make you forget about any sickness, instead, you’ll be enjoying the 'one hell of a ride’ it gives you.

"I get it. It’s nice up here. You can just shut down all the systems, turn out all the lights, and just close your eyes and tune out everyone. There’s nobody up here that can hurt you. It’s safe. I mean, what’s the point of going on? What’s the point of living? Your kid died. Doesn’t get any rougher than that. But still, it’s a matter of what you do now. If you decide to go, then you gotta just get on with it. Sit back, enjoy the ride. You gotta plant both your feet on the ground and start livin’ life. Hey, Ryan? It’s time to go home."
