When I first saw this movie trailer, I thought this would be another typical Tom Cruise movie. You know, mostly he played a handsome, tough, smart, and agent-kind-of guy with super cool fighting skill and a mission to accomplish. This one, his character is different.
Major William Cage, played by Tom Cruise, is a Public Affairs Officer in United States army. Later, he receives order to join combat on the beaches in France to fight a race of aliens called Mimics that apparently have overtaken Europe. If this is Tom Cruise’s other movie, he might be willing to join the combat, survive the battle, go home and welcome his woman into his arms. Well, this is 'Edge of Tomorrow'.
Let’s just say William Cage is a coward. He’s not that type of a person who does the dirty job, so, he strongly refused the order. Still, he was forced to be in the army, joined the combat and ended up being killed. Or, not really. Because, somehow, he absorbed the Mimic’s ability. He found himself trapped in a time loop and kept repeating the day before the battle. This made his skills as a soldier got improved every time he repeated the day.
What make this interesting for me is that Tom cruise played a different character. I love how his character develops through the movie. We could see how William Cage changed. We could see how he’s getting bored and tired with that situation. We understand how he’s even thinking of giving up. He’s like normal people, we could relate to him. I love how his character is not too Hollywood-esque. This is very unlikely, I think.
Well, it is because 'Edge of Tomorrow' is adapted from a science fiction light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka entitled 'All You Need Is Kill'. This is only my opinion, but I always feel that Japanese movies/dramas are interesting because of their unique stories of characters. That is why Tom Cruise succeeds this time, he represents a different character based on a Japanese literature, unlike any character he has brought to us before.
In the end, I think 'Edge of Tomorrow' is far from the word disappointing. I love the cinematography, I love both of Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise’s acting performances, I love the story. Anyway, it makes me want to read the 'All You Need Is Kill' manga, which was illustrated by Takeshi Obata. Awesome!
'Edge of Tomorrow' is directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton and Brendan Gleeson.
