When I was in high school, it was a mandatory for the whole students to attend a sex education. They reminded us for not having sex before marriage or even if you do, should be protected. They even mentioned some venereal diseases that would be transmitted during sexual intercourse.
Now, this movie is definitely not about sex education, but watching this reminded me of that.
However, it wasn’t a venereal disease that’s being transmitted, it was… a ‘thing’. A creepy thing.
Jay (Maika Monroe) was having this one time with his boyfriend Hugh (Jake Weary) when later on Hugh admitted that he passed along something to her. He told Jay to stay alive and find someone else to pass it along to. If she’s killed, 'it’ would turn back to Hugh.
What a jerk, isn’t he?
While Jay kept running from that 'thing’, we would learn a couple of things. That 'thing’ didn’t run like a zombie, didn’t crawl on the roof like a lizard-like creature, or all of the sudden appeared in front of you like a ghost. 'It’ walks. Toward you. Slowly but steady. For me, that’s quite scary. Unlike other horror movies where the ghost’s appearance is either shocking or moves really fast, this one is really slow. You’ll keep running from 'it’ until you’re tired and think “maybe it’s time to give up.” That’s mentally kill you. Moreover, 'it’ took an appearance of normal people. You’ll keep guessing if this person is real or not. You’ll start doubting everyone and become paranoid. See? That’s why I think the horror is different and I really recommend it to you.
The idea is original, the actors gave a believable acting performances, the music scoring is on fleek, and the open-ending where the director gave you a second thought on what showed in the last scene, everything makes this movie worth to be added to your movie collection.
Now, after watching it, would you think twice before sleeping with someone you barely know?
'It Follows' is directed by David Robert Mitchell and starring Maika Monroe, Keil Gilchrist, Jake Weary, Lili Sepe, Daniel Zovatto and Olivia Luccardi.
