Wes Anderson finally sets his place in Hollywood with 'The Grand Budapest Hotel'

'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is one of two movies that lead the Oscars by having 9 nominations, which are Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Music - Original Score, Best Cinematography, Best Writing - Original Screenplay, Best Directing, and of course, Best Picture. Never before any of Wes Anderson’s movies received such many nominations. This might be his year. Or not. It all depends on who will win the ultimate category, that is Best Picture. But, as a fan of Wes Anderson’s work, I’m super happy with this.
He has his own style in directing. His precision in details, would it be the gesture, props, costume, sound, or camera movement, have always been fascinating. Watching Wes Anderson movie is like looking at a masterpiece of art. It’s beautiful, yet always filled with humour. And for me, 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' is his best so far, although my favourite is still 'Fantastic Mr. Fox'.
Let’s point out on how he divided his movie into 3 ratios to enhance the three different eras the story is delivered, and also how the movement of the characters are almost like a choreography in a dance, or how his colour palette this time was contrast yet matched with the story of passion, murders and greed. No wonder this movie received those nominations. It’s Wes Anderson together with Hugo Guiness, Robert D. Yeoman, Milena Canonero, Barney Pilling, and Alexandre Desplat creating the grand design of the life of Gustave H, played magnificently by Ralph Fiennes.
Yes, the acting was also superb. I always remember Ralph Fiennes as the antagonist. He’s good at it. But, as Gustave H, he showed a comical side. He’s gentle and caring, smart and polite. The other actors also seem like playing with the same vibe, too. Well, Wes Anderson got his best ensemble cast ever.
The scoring part is always what I love the most. Alexandre Desplat was doing great. He brings the traditional accent by creating the classic sounds with enigma tunes. You could feel you’re in the northern Europe in 1920s trying to solve cases.
So, would this dominant contender win those 9 nominations? I don’t know. We don’t know. I don’t even dare guessing which nominations would be won by 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', because, those movies in the nominations are great pleasure to watch. I can only predict that this year’s Oscar would be exciting!
